Fold Directions:
- Lay your pocket square on a flat surface – smooth out the wrinkles.
- Fold the square in half to form a rectangle.
- Begin to pleat the cloth vertically, evenly spacing each fold.
- Pleat the entirety of the cloth, and hold in formation.
- Using an elastic band, create a hold at the bottom third of the cloth.
- Flare the pleats outward at the top.
- Carefully place the fold into your jacket pocket.
About the Fold:
This casual fold is one of those folds that very few people can figure out for themselves. Looking at the fold, it seems easy enough but it’s always hard to keep that fan structure. The trick is an elastic band to hold it all together. Use this fold on weekends and holidays. The lack of straight lines makes it a casual fold with some subtle flair.
The fan fold is nice and flamboyant for social occasions. It looks like a tiny little fan poking out from the pocket, as though it’s a warm sunny day and there is an elf in there ready to cool you down for the afternoon.
This fold is suited to a range of fabrics and designs. Use it to show off a vibrant and colourful pocket square that you’ve reserved for an evening with friends. Just keep in mind that you will need an elastic band in order to put it all together; the secret ingredient for this relatively simple fold.
The Fan Fold shows off a laid-back and casual attitude. To look at, it does seem deceptively simple but will have some scratching their heads on how the folds manage to stay in place without the square flattening out. You can also make adjustments to have a small fan and a big fan for a double fan square. It’s a fun fold. Enjoy it.
